The Center for AI Safety recently published a statement that “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.”
It was signed by many of the leading experts in the field, including Canada’s Geoffrey Hinton, Yoshua Bengio, and Gillian Hadfield.
AIGS Canada fully supports this statement as both factually correct and an important step in advancing the conversation on AI safety.
We urge the Canadian government and all public and private stakeholders to take heed of this message, and to follow through with actions that will significantly reduce AI risk.
For an explanation of what those risks are, please read our recent Op-ed in the Toronto Star.
