In a major development for AI governance in Canada, a group of 30 MPs and Senators signed a statement today calling for a prohibition of superintelligent AI.
Superintelligence refers to the smarter-than-human AI systems that leading companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google expect to build in the next 2-5 years. These systems are likely to bring unprecedented opportunities in areas like healthcare and economic growth, but also present major challenges for national security, jobs, and just about every aspect of Canadian’s lives.
It’s also the level of AI that Canada’s leading scientists Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton have been warning policymakers about since 2023.
The campaign (which AIGS Canada was not affiliated with) was led by UK-based Control AI. Geoffrey Hinton endorsed the campaign.
CBC was the first to cover the story, with quotes from Wyatt Tessari L’Allié, founder and executive director of AI Governance and Safety Canada.
