OUR FOCUS
Artificial Intelligence Governance & Safety Canada (AIGS) is a nonpartisan not-for-profit and a community of people across the country, working to ensure that advanced AI is safe and beneficial for all. We started with the question "What can we do in Canada, and from Canada, to ensure positive AI outcomes?"
While we are supportive of any work that addresses risks from AI or advances our chances to ensure human flourishing in the age of AI, we focus on the impacts of upcoming smarter-than-human AI systems. These represent the greatest risks and opportunities, are most overlooked by government, and could be developed much sooner than most people realise.

WHAT YOU CAN DO
There are multiple ways to get involved based on your skills and availability:
Level 1 volunteers are Explorers who are part of our Slack community, attend our events, and learn about the Canadian AI ecosystem without committing to regularly performing tasks over an extended period of time, although they might support us occasionally and ad hoc.
Level 2 volunteers are Supporters that contribute their time and skills for a few hours per week. We rely on them for small projects and grant them LinkedIn Volunteer Status after two months of regular contributions to their team’s tasks.
Level 3 members are Team Leaders and Core Staff, recruited from level 2 volunteers, performing core functions at AIGS.
TEAMS
We have set up five different teams at AIGS, Events, Communications, Policy, Tech Support, and Operations.
Since Tech Support and Operations require only a small team and special skills, there is no option for level 1 volunteers. Hence, you won’t be able to select these two on the sign-up form, but you can still indicate relevant skills for these activities, allowing us to reach out to you if there is need in the future.
